Celebrating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, Lincoln Castle was at the centre of the fight for English identity. King John died in 1216, his son Henry III was only nine. Some invited the French to take the English throne; the deciding battle was here in 1217 when the French were defeated at the Battle of Lincoln Fair. Confronted y rebellious barons on June 15, 1215 at Runnymede. King John sealed Magna Carta to safeguard the rights of the clergy and nobles – and to place limits on the power of the crown. Nobody, including the King, is above the law of the land. Since 1215 Lincoln Cathedral has been home to one of only four original Magna Carta.
Objective
We had an idea about creating a beer to celebrate celebrating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta and proposed it to Batemans as Lincolnshire is home to them and to one of the original four Magna Carta.
Solution
Working together with Batemans, East Lindsey District Council and Lincolnshire County Council, we focused on celebrating not only the Magna Carta, but the some of the important places that led to the King putting his seal to Magna Carta, including Lincoln Castle and Lincoln Cathedral. This limited edition beer was launched at the newly refurbished Lincoln Castle, which dates from 1068 and has just undergone a £22million investment.
